Hip hip horray!

So my hip has been bothering me for a couple months now and I've finally bit the bullet and went to see a doctor this morning. As some of you may know, my brother has a bum hip and had to have a hip replacement surgury last year at the age of early-40-something. When he found out about this bum hip many years ago, he told me that his Dr. told him it was from birth and his siblings could have it. So since he told me this I have carried around this deep-seated paranoia that my hips are shit as well and I would have to go through the same discomfort/pain/etc.

So.

I'm fine!!

Whee! I had x-rays done and my hip is in perfect condition. Mike thinks I'm a nutty hypochondriac, which I am, but I really feel like a huuuuge weight has been lifted from my shoulders.

The scoop is I proably have bursitis which is no biggie and will get better with rest and stretching before exercising which I had not been doing. Hurrah, life is good! (until the next thing I can worry about comes along).

The Beginning of Summer

Megan noted in her blog that for her summer had officially begun since she saw her first firefly of the year. For me summer has officially begun now that I've seen the first cockroach in our apartment of the year.

New and noteworthy

Yeah, the weather is roasty toasty here as of late, which I don't mind thanks to air conditioning and our close proximity to the pool. We finally bit the bullet and cranked the AC late last week after the cats hadn't moved in days and I actually felt nauseous and light-headed.

I finished reading several books last week, one was Anybody Out There? by Marion Keyes. I love her books as they are the perfect chick lit. Funny, touching, sad, and always a love interest. This book was more sad than most and by the end I was bawling my eyes out. Yes, I am a losah. I also read Somthing Borrowed by Emily Giffen. Another chick lit, and this one was fab. The main character has spent her life in the shadow of her overbearing and competative best friend. The BF takes every opportunity to make the main character feel like she isn't as smart, pretty, worthy, etc. Hmmm, I can't tell you how much it reminded me of a certain former-BF of mine that I had this type of relationship with in highschool. Of course the BF gets what's coming to her by the end which made it a very satisfying book for me.

In other news I still haven't heard from that woman's car insurance company, and surely won't until I call them myself. Not in the mood so I've been putting it off.

Also, I got a reciept from the effing government re: my work application and $180 I sent them. Apparently it takes 60 to 75 days to complete this type of request. WTF? Jaysus, all I want is some meager part-time min-wage job. I guess that's just too much to ask.

I booked a flight for my folks, they shall be arriving Sept 6 (our anniversary!) and leaving Oct 4. A lenghty stay you might say? Yes, but we'll be spending a week+ in Florida and I won't have seen them for almost a year by then.

So that's it kids!

Apparently there is nothing in this country that needs fixing

and therefore there are time and money wasters such as this:
http://www.independentmail.com/and/home/article/0,1886,AND_8195_4641568,00.html

Seriously, what is wrong with this country, or at least the south?? The delightful women on the View were discussing this, and of course naive moron Elizabeth sort of agreed with it, or at least the advertising aspect of it. I think they just have these bills to appease the conservative masses here and never enforce it though. It says that there is a similar bill in Georgia but I know of several sex toy shops that certainly aren't discreet about what they are selling. Why the government thinks they have the right to tell people what they can and can't do in the bedroom is beyond me.

Mmmm summer cocktails

One of my favorite things about summer is the delicous drinks that go hand in hand with days out in the sun. I thought I would share a couple tasty recipes I plan on making:

Bellini
1/2 oz peach liquer
1 oz peach juice or nectar
chilled champagne or sparkling wine
Pour liquer and juice into a chilled champagne flute. Slowly top with champage. I also think blending the liquer with a few ice cubes would make it more Milestone-esque.

Bahama Mama
1/2 oz Malibu
1/2 oz Kahlua
1/2 oz each dark and white rum
pineapple juice
pineapple wedge
mint sprigs
crushed ice
Half-fill shaker with ice cubes. Add boozes. Shake and strain into cute glass half filled with crushed ice. Top with juice, garnish with pineapple and mint. Yum!

Soft Claws

For those of you with scratching cats who are indoors only, might I recommend Soft Claws? Seriously, they are God's gift to owner's of bad cats.

Luna has totally destroyed the carpet so and someone on a cat message board suggested these little beauties. I'm so pleased with them, Luna doesn't seem to mind and now she can't wreck things anymore. They're pretty cheap and really do work like a charm.

As a little aside with the car issue, I had to file a claim under the other person's insurance, and basically they get to decide whether they want to pay for my repairs. I'll be pretty much in shock if they decide to since the police report says that I was illegally parked. It seems like a totally bizarre system that the insurance company can decide whether or not to pay, and come on, as if they will. I guess ICBC wasn't so bad after all.

Feck

Ugh. So my car got hit yesterday while I was illegally parked and it may potentially be my fault. I was on a redidential street and didn't notice the no parking signs. For any accident, no matter how minor the police must be called to fill out an accident report (hello waste of tax payer money, but that's another post). So until the cops showed up I still didn't know I was illegally parked. When they arrived they practically yelled at me to move my car, and I don't deal well with being yelled at so I was already emotional. Then they told me I might get a ticket for the parking, which would have been the icing on the fucking cake but they decided not too. Then I was told this was pretty much my fault for being parked there. Um, wtf? So I can go around hitting illegally parked cars and take no responsibilily? Anyways, I burst into tears (really embarassing, anyone who has seen me cry knows it ain't pretty) and then the cop says well it's basically between the insuracne companies. Gah. So I think it will be that we're both at fault, in which case we can't afford our $300 deductible right now which means we'll have a huge dent in passenger door for the next year. Fuckity fuck.

Excitement at Highland Lake

While we didn't watch an action movie last night, we saw plenty off our balcony. At about midnight I was in bed reading and Mike was watching poker. I heard a helicopter fly quite low overhead, circle around and fly back again. Being my nosy self, I got up and peeked outside thinking it must be a police helicopter. Sure enough it was so I dragged Mike out onto the balcony with me. The chopper is circling around the wooded area behind our complex with it's search spotlight on. All of a sudden Mike is like, can you hear that? It sounded like someone running though the woods breaking branches. I got totally freaked out and opened the door to go inside and Mike is like, there they are! I didn't see them but four guys ran into the complex parking lot, brushing pine needles off their clothes, one on crutches!

So Mike is like, quick, call 911 and tell them we saw them! So I did, and was pretty much blathering on to the poor woman on the phone but I got the point across. As an aside I must say that being a 911 operator must be such a difficult job, I can't imagine taking calls from people whose adrenaline is running so high they are practically babbling. Anways, a few minutes later the chopper dissapeared so we assume they must have caught the guys. I also figure they must have gotten plenty of calls with better descriptions, we can't be the only looky loos who were gawking at the goings on.

I checked the news this morning and there isn't any word of what happened, maybe a police chopper chase is a common occurence? Anyways, I really want to know what happened but I guesss I'm SOL. I told Mom this morning about it and she seemed a little nervous for us but I this certainly isn't an everyday thing so I'm not worried. I'll post any updates if I hear.

The elusive mullet

Some of you may think of the mullet as a mythical creature, only found in B-movies and email jokes. The days of Billy Ray Cyrus may be long over, but here in South the mullet is alive and well. Please note exhibit A, a photo taken from an outlet mall outside of Atlanta:

Ah yes, note how excited Kim is to see this fine specimen (believe me, I was thrilled as well). All the required mullet elements are present. The wave, the unfortunate uneven layering, and the poofy top.

Actually, this is the first mullet here I've seen if you can believe it. And hopefully not the last.

Politicians are funny

Well, their ad campaigns are at least. I have seen two ads for the upcoming governor election and they both totally crack me up. One tells us how lucky we are that our governor was an air force captain, is still married to his highschool sweetheart, is a foster parent, and has run small businesses. Uh, that's great but this has what to do with how he's running things?

The second is so ridiculous I thought it was a joke. Referred to as the "big guy" (good lord), it is promoting his plan for health care (including vision and dental) for all children in Georgia. That's a wonderful idea, but the commercial is him frolicking with a group of adorable babies. Seriously, I know it probably tugs at people's heart strings, but it's so incredibly cheezy it was nausiating.

Were Canadian ads this craptastic?

Empty Nest

Today is the first day in almost three weeks I've been alone, and to tell you the truth I'm a little bored. Kim left early Saturday morning, and we really had a fab visit. Plenty of shopping, wine, Date my Mom, dancing, and other festivities made these past few weeks a total blast. Now I have to return to writing and focusing on getting my Visa application in. Even the cats seem a bit out of sorts, missing having yet another person to harrass in the middle of the night.

In other news we watched Hostel on Friday night. Um, yipes! It was gruesome and gory, but had a totally satisfying ending. If you like horror flicks you must rent this. We also watched Corpse Bride last night, and it was adorable! Mike and both love stop-motion animation and this was impressive to say the least. It was also nice and short since my attention span limit for movies seems to have dropped to just over an hour lately.

The weather is shite here today, but this evening is our Sopranos/Big Love night over at Megan and Anna's so yay for something to do. Now I have a long lazy summer of days by the pool to look forward to. Oh wait, I was going to get a job.
